In Preparation of the Vote in Parliament on the Resource Efficiency Report, 25/04/2012 (Rapporteur: Gerbrandy)

Short summary:

Municipal Waste Europe welcomes the Resource Efficiency Report that underlines the importance of recovering resources in waste. Municipalities are a key partner in the resource-efficiency strategy.
Municipal Waste Europe proposed amendments to the report, highlighting that the collection and treatment of separately collected waste for recycling from municipal sources is a service which must be provided, initially for the protection of public health and hygiene and is therefore under the responsibility of the public bodies who are there to serve and protect their citizens and collect charges from them for this purpose. This is the basis of the term 'service of general interest' (SGI).
