SECOND READING – Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment RE-CAST directive

The first reading, concluding the first step of the legislative process establishing a revised directive of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, was finalised on 19 July 2011. The final and complete position of the Council was then published. Read it here

The European Parliament presented on 2 August 2011 its draft recommendations for the second reading on the recast of the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Read it here
The European Commission presented on 11 August a communication regarding the position of The Council in the first reading. The Council published the document on 16 August 2011.
The Communication includes a detailed description of the Councils positions in specific issues especially interesting is the national approach to producer obligations as well as the collection targets.
The Commission concludes that they can not accept the Council’s position in its entirety. They had already on 14 March when the Member states agreed on their position, expressed significant reservations on the text. Read it here
The European Parliament Environmental Committee will discuss the proposal on their next meeting on 8 September 2011. Their deadline for tabling amendments is on 12 September 2011.
