PRESS RELEASE - MWE proposed amendments to the Renewable Energy Directive

Posted on Monday 28 November 2022

RED III does not give the correct valuation to the Greenhouse Gas Savings of treating Biowaste (separately collected food waste) by Anaerobic Digestion (AD) in Annex VI. The Directive assumes compost as the starting ‘fuel’ going into AD which is entirely false, as raw food waste is the feedstock. This creates falsely low GHG emissions savings, as the baseline in reality is landfilling and in a great number Member States with high landfilling percentages, biowaste is still landfilled untreated. This is occurring at a time of energy crisis in Europe with increasing energy poverty as well as just 13 months before the obligation to collect all biowaste in the EU separately.
