MWE Position Paper on the Batteries & Waste Batteries Regulation
Posted on Wednesday 26 May 2021
On 10 December 2020, the European Commission published a proposal for a new Batteries & Waste Batteries Regulation with the aim of boosting a circular economy for batteries. MWE welcomes the Commission's proposal to adapt the 2006 Batteries Directive to current and future needs by making it a Regulation and taking into account the aims of the Circular Economy Action Plan 2.0 and the European Green Deal to electrify transport. MWE is well aware of the expected increase in battery manufacture driven by the energy transition which will result in a greater number of batteries entering the waste stream yearly. Given the importance of this new Regulation and the essential role of municipalities, MWE would like to point out a set of crucial points for improvement. Position paper here.
